Based on past history, there is a village area that is overgrown with cinnamon which is a type of spice for cooking. In the language of the local community in the area, they call it kayu kondingau. The arrival of the British in the area made keningau bark one of their exports. Indirectly, the hinterland became an important Keningau bark producer at that time. Finally, the area was called keningau and from a village it developed into a city that did not lag behind with progress and became the administrative center in the interior of Sabah.
